Today, out of a whim, I decided to go shopping for a good silk lining suit. An officemate of mine who’s about to enter the monastery in three weeks time offered to come along and to even to help pick a good one for me.

So we went around all the trendy boutiques in Eastwood, took a good hour just to enter all of them, rummage through the selections, and to finally get one. Mind you, this was already at around 9:00pm, and my officemate friend had to go home to Las Pinas.

Another good thirty minutes was spent in the altering shop (and for which the whole general altering racked a good 4 digit sum, about just as much as the suit). By now the clock’s at 9:30. I notice my officemate friend who went with me smiling, when, he was doing nothing, just standing there, enjoying the company.

Finally, we caught the first ride we could get to Cubao and by 10:00pm, he was still able to get the last train ride to the south. Before we parted ways, I extended my apologies to him that I had to drag him, through the window shopping, walking, and even to the altering shop. I also apologized to him that because of all of this, he had to go home late.

My officemate friend smiled back at me and what he said struck a chord. He said in all lightheartedness that it’s fully alright and he appreciates the company fully, for he will miss these small everyday things in life dearly when he enters the monastery.

Well, imagine that.

Out of the busy and fast paced life that we lose ourselves into, most of us tend to forget and take for granted the ordinary things in life - the mundane experiences; the simple act of accompanying someone, a plain gesture, and of course, a simple smile.

For one to know and feel that he has been blessed is a humbling experience. But for one to know and realize that he was an instrument, by the makings of a bigger purpose, to be a blessing for someone, is even more so humbling. Our acknowledgement of and gratefulness for God’s grace are still by far the killer of pride.

Indeed, He works in mysterious ways. Goodnight. =)
